Praying For America
Dr. Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, TN and SBC President said, "On behalf of all Southern Baptists, I wish to convey our deepest, heartfelt sorrow to all those involved in the shooting that took place this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Seventeen precious lives were taken in a senseless, sinful act of violence." Dr. Gaines also shared, "Ours is a sinful world where tragedies such as this occur. I urge all people to pray and seek the presence of the Holy Spirit that comes from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christ alone can and will give the deepest comfort and peace to all who call upon Him."
Frank S. Page, president of the SBC Executive Committee, echoed the need for a prayer response, saying in comments to Baptist Press, "We are certainly praying for the victims and their families. We're also praying for the churches and pastors in that area as they minister so unselfishly to this hurting community. We pray for our Lord to be very near to them all.”
As one of our members said to me this past Sunday, “The problem behind these senseless actions starts in a person’s heart.” If we are to stop such horrors, we must pray and seek to get the Gospel to our lost world. Jesus is not only the source of comfort for the victims of such tragedies, He is the Savior who can turn a heart away from doing such harm. The only solution to the sin of our world is found in Jesus.
